The Story of Solnahomi Jimenez-Mendoza

Recipient of the 2024 Roger Graham Scholarship

In the heart of Eastern Hancock High School, a young woman named Solnahomi “Sol” Jimenez-Mendoza has been making waves with her determination, resilience, and unwavering passion for the construction industry. Sol, the recipient of the 2024 Roger Graham Scholarship, has a vision and a dream that goes beyond personal success – it’s about honoring her family’s legacy, giving back to her community, and shaping a brighter future for herself and her loved ones.

The Journey

Sol’s journey towards her dream career in construction management hasn’t been without its challenges. Growing up, she felt the weight of expectations as she tried to align her aspirations with her others’ vision of her future. As she entered her late teens, Sol embarked on a journey of self-discovery and clarity, realizing that her true passion lies in the construction industry, a field that holds deep significance for her family.

In her application, Sol shared her career aspirations, stating, “I always had my dream career set at a really high standard as a kid because I wanted to please others’ picture of my future. They pictured me as a cardiologist, a lawyer, bank accountant, [etc.] Now that I’m 19 and figuring out what I really want to make of myself and what career path interests me the most, I have a vision plan of someday becoming a construction manager.”

Goals & Values

What sets Sol apart is not just her career goals, but the values she lives by every day. She believes in giving her all, being passionate and hardworking, and not rushing through tasks but instead focusing on precision and enjoying the process. Sol’s determination has been evident in various aspects of her life, from her academic pursuits to her part-time job as a waitress, where she learned valuable lessons about perseverance and resilience.

Sol’s commitment to excellence and her dedication to her craft are what embody the statement, “Scholarship money isn’t given away, it’s earned.” She strongly agrees with this sentiment, understanding that scholarships are opportunities earned through ambition, hard work, and dedication.

The Application Process

While Sol initially felt discouraged to apply for scholarships due to her academic challenges and busy schedule, her journey with the Roger Graham Scholarship has been a transformative one. The scholarship not only provides financial support for her education but also serves as a symbol of recognition for her determination and potential.

Sol was encouraged by Jennie Gaylord, her Finite Mathematics teacher, who wrote in her recommendation letter, “I have observed [Sol’s] growth into a diligent individual who tackles challenging concepts with a positive mindset. Sol is proactive in seeking additional support and handles difficult situations gracefully. Despite working outside school to support her family, she uses this as motivation to excel further. Sol’s increased self-confidence and willingness to participate reflect her high moral character, making her a worthy candidate for your scholarship.”

Sol’s Future

As Sol embarks on her journey towards a career in construction management at Ivy Tech, she carries with her the values of hard work, perseverance, and giving back. Her vision of helping her father manage a construction and tile company in Florida, which he had to shut down years ago, speaks volumes about her commitment to family and community.

Sol’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and the impact of scholarships in transforming lives. As we celebrate Sol’s achievements, we also encourage all students, regardless of their challenges, to pursue their dreams and apply for scholarships that can help them build brighter futures.
