We all look forward to holiday weekends to spend time with family and friends. The 4th of July weekend is no exception. It’s often celebrated with barbecues, swimming, boating, and, of course, fireworks. While this holiday brings joy, it also leads to many hospitalizations, particularly from firework-related injuries. Fireworks are a staple of the 4th of July festivities for most Americans, but they can be inherently dangerous, especially when mixed with alcohol or handled by children.
The most common firework injuries involve the hands and fingers. In fact, the CPSC estimated that 3,100 hand and finger injuries were treated in emergency departments from June 21, 2020, to July 21, 2020. However, injuries can occur to any part of the body. While some injuries are burns that will heal with time, others result in the complete loss of hands or fingers, drastically affecting life at home and the ability to work.
If you choose to use fireworks, it’s crucial to handle them safely.
Holiday weekends are meant to be enjoyed. The 4th of July is a major holiday for most Americans. If you choose to celebrate with fireworks, please do so safely. Protect not only yourself but your loved ones as well, especially children. Remember, injuries from poor decisions can last a lifetime.
So, enjoy your 4th of July, but keep safety front and center. A few precautions can ensure that your holiday is filled with joy, not trips to the emergency room. Stay safe, and have a fantastic Independence Day!
