Built By Hand: The Craft Behind Our Cranes

CraneWerks Department Spotlight: Fabricators

Fabrication is at the core of what we do at CraneWerks. Our fabricators build the equipment our dealers rely on every day to answer, “yes!” when customers need overhead crane and hoist solutions. Their work takes skill, focus, and pride, and it plays a direct role in keeping American manufacturing moving.

When we asked our shop foreman, Mark Lucas, what a typical day looks like, his answer was simple. Fabricators have a day full of surprises and new challenges each day, no two days are the same. From special projects to large gantry cranes, fabrication work demands focus, precision, and pride in doing things right the first time.

That kind of work cannot always be automated. As Mark puts it, not all things can be done robotically. Skilled trades still rely on experienced hands, sharp eyes, and people who understand how things come together in the real world. That mindset is what continues to make fabricators essential.

The Tools, Skills, And Pride Behind The Work of Fabricators

Fabricators rely on tools like welders, mag drills, tape measures, and squares to get the job done efficiently and accurately. But tools alone are not enough. Reading blueprints, having patience, and reading a tape are critical skills, and they are learned through a mix of schooling and hands on experience, then sharpened every day on the shop floor.

With experience comes efficiency. One of the most rewarding parts of the job is completing work on time or ahead of schedule and knowing it was done right. Seeing a finished crane ready to ship reinforces our value of craftsmanship.

Our crew of fabricators recently worked on a project Mark is especially proud of: 567 gantries. Large builds, tight timelines, and real responsibility are part of the daily work. That is fabrication at CraneWerks.

Why Skilled Trades Still Matter in a World focused on AI

Fabricators do more than cut and weld steel. They problem solve. Fabrication is understanding how equipment will be used in the real world and building it to make customers jobs easier and safer.

Our fabricators know their work has a direct impact on the people who use it. That connection to the finished product is one of the most rewarding parts of a career in the trades.

Culture matters too. At CraneWerks, teamwork and mutual respect are part of the job. Mark describes the environment as laid back, with strong camaraderie. It is a place where fabricators work hard, support one another, and take pride in what they build.

A Message To High School Students – to Future Fabricators

If you are a high school student thinking about your future, the skilled trades deserve a serious look.

Fabricators get the opportunity for a steady opportunity. Skilled tradesmen are always in demand, and the work rewards fabricators who stay open minded and willing to learn. As Mark points out, there is always a job opportunity in the trades.

The advice from the fabricators on the shop floor is honest and straightforward. Be certain the trade you choose is something you would be content with. For those who enjoy working with their hands, solving real problems, and seeing the results of their effort at the end of the day, fabrication can be a career that lasts.

Mark also offers a reminder that applies to any skilled trade: keep an open mind and do not get set in your ways. Growth comes from learning and adapting.

Roger Graham Memorial Scholarship Fund

Investing In The Next Generation Of Tradesmen

That belief in skilled trades and fabricators specifically is why CraneWerks proudly supports The Roger Graham Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was created to encourage students who want to pursue trade school and build a future in manufacturing.

Many of our fabricators followed this same path. Trade school combined with hands on experience gave them the foundation to build careers they are proud of and work that matters.

If you or someone you know is considering trade school, now is the time to take the next step. The Roger Graham Memorial Scholarship helps students (future fabricators!) pursue education in the skilled trades and begin a career in manufacturing.
