Going Coast to Coast with Overhead Crane Service

Department Spotlight: Service

The Big Picture of Service

We sat down with our Service Manager, Aaron Jenkins to talk all things service. He shares, “covering everything from service to reman to inspections to repairs to onsite [maintenance] and training,” our team can help dealers who either don’t have a service department or aren’t yet equipped to provide overhead crane and hoist services to their customers. The main goal is to make sure all of our dealers are able to say, “yes!” to all of their customers overhead lifting needs.

The CraneWerks service crew is able to provide:

Onsite Repairs & Maintenance

Have a problem with your equipment? The service team gets it diagnosed and repaired. Hoist and crane part replacements needed? Secured. Whether it’s a ¼-ton hoist or a 200-ton crane, our technicians have the experience and perseverance to get the job done.

Some of our technicians go to the same locations on a regular basis, some are at different locations under the same umbrella.

Preventative Maintenance is a great option that Aaron recommends – this allows our techs to see small issues on a regular basis, before they become major issues. What does this look like?

  • Check oil
  • Fill oil
  • Lubricate
  • Fix limit issues
  • Check and set brakes

Reman

Hoist remanufacturing is an option that can be quicker than buying new.

Inspections

Inspections are required by OSHA, and these are where you find potential or existing issues before something bad happens. Crane and hoist inspections can be made to meet your individual needs. Whether you’re needing basic, frequent, or periodic inspections or a complete inspection and preventative maintenance program, we’re here to support you in getting the job done.

Crane Operator Training

The service team offers a 4 hour class once a week at one facility. This helps crane operators in the long run and prevents downtime. Aaron reminds,

“If you see something say something. Some of the companies that spend a lot of money on maintenance and operator negligence would be [avoided].”

The Evolution of CraneWerks’ Service

6 years ago, our service department consisted of 8 technicians. We’ve almost tripled since then. Working coast to coast, this team knows grit.

Daily Operations

A Typical Day

A typical day for the service team looks different depending on the service they’re providing. Techs providing preventative maintenance and inspections are going into different locations each day, but on a regular schedule. Emergency repairs look a little different. Aaron shares, “If a call comes in at 2am, we go out at 2am.” While they plan for a ‘normal’ day, oftentimes this team isn’t working on set schedule, but rather supply and demand.

Decision Making

To stay on track, the service team:

  • Gathers reports throughout the day on what’s going on out in the field
  • Stays in contact daily
  • Reports to both the customer and the internal managers

Challenges

With ~140 jobs last year, 1000s of parts going out daily, 500+ quotes last year, and after hours calls – there’s room for challenges in the service department. This team deals with a lot of moving parts – both literally and figuratively. They manage quotes, contact dealers, and help crane operators as necessary.

Team Dynamics

The service team most often coordinates with the install team and fab shop, shifting cross-trained members back and forth to support the schedule as needed.
