Personal Hygiene

Keeping Your Workplace Clean, Healthy, and Comfortable

We all want to work in a place that feels clean, comfortable, and safe. A big part of that comes down to personal hygiene—an easy thing to overlook, but a big deal when it comes to maintaining a healthy environment, especially in a shared workspace. Noise management, cleanliness, and odor control all play a part in this.

  • Noise Management

Try to keep personal conversations short and sweet, use headphones for virtual meetings, avoid speakerphone, and take calls in private to be mindful of your overall volume.

  • Cleanliness

Clean up after yourself, point blank. If you take the last one, restock it. If you drop it, pick it up. Wipe down a table after use, wash your dishes –  consider your coworkers.

  • Scent & Odor Control

Save personal grooming (like nail clipping) for private areas, opt for unscented or minimally fragrant lotions, perfumes, colognes, etc., and avoid bringing highly pungent foods like fish and boiled eggs in open spaces.

Let’s Be Real

We’re all grown adults. No one wants to be told to wash their hands or clean up after themselves—but these small habits go a long way. Washing hands after using the restroom, before eating, or after working with tools, machinery, or materials keeps germs from spreading and protects your coworkers. It goes beyond your own personal hygiene—it’s about everyone who shakes your hand, touches the same doorknobs, candy bowl, coffee pot, or keyboards after you.

Shared Spaces

Shared spaces mean shared responsibility. If your hands are visibly dirty, take a moment to wash up before grabbing door handles, leaning on walls, or reaching into that communal candy bowl. These high-touch areas can quickly become breeding grounds for germs and grime. The fewer messes we leave behind, the more comfortable and safe the environment is for everyone.

On that same note, grooming belongs at home. Brushing your hair, trimming nails, flossing, or doing any other kind of personal care at your desk or in common areas isn’t just distracting—it’s unsanitary. Even if you think it’s not a big deal, those things tend to stick in people’s minds and affect how others feel about the workspace. Let’s keep personal hygiene just that – personal.

Consideration of Others

Good personal hygiene isn’t about perfection—it’s about awareness. We’re all working in close quarters, and a little effort goes a long way. By taking care of ourselves and being mindful of how we share space, we help create a workplace that’s healthy, respectful, and professional for everyone.
